A new NFL policy will require anyone on the field to stand for the national anthem. Players will be allowed to stay in the locker room during the anthem if they do not wish to stand, but their teams will fined if they go onto the field and kneel.
To allow this new ruling the NFL owners also eliminated the rule that required players to be on the field during the national anthem. The new rule only applies to players and staff on the field.
A statement from Rodger Goodell made sure to differentiate the anthem protests from being unpatriotic and state NFL is committed to work toward social justice and progress.
“We are honored to work with our players to drive progress… It was unfortunate that on-field protests created a false perception among many that thousands of NFL players were unpatriotic. This is not and was never the case,” Goodell said.
The NFL posted a tweet releasing the full statement.
