The Villanova Wildcats defeat the Michigan Wolverines 79-62 to win their second NCAA title in three years. (Full box score below)
The Wildcats were led by sophomore guard Donte DiVincenzo who had 31 points off the bench for the Wildcats. DiVincenzo single handedly outscored the Michigan bench 31-7.
Michigan shot poorly all game finishing 13% from deep and 43% overall. Nova shot 37% from deep and 47% overall.
Villanova looked like the better team nearly the entire game. The difference in bench points and three point field goal percentage were the difference. When Michigan shoots well from deep they are a dangerous team, but last night the couldn’t find the touch.
The Wildcats win another title under Head Coach Jay Wright who solidified himself as an elite coach in college basketball. MVP Donte DiVincenzo was the X-factor of the game, though. His 31 points where unexpected and he was in a zone that was impossible to stop according to Michigan coach John Beilein.
“Even if we had played our best, it would have been very difficult to win that game with what DiVincenzo did,” Beilein said. “It was an incredible performance. Sometimes those individual performances just beat you, and you just say, `OK. We played you the best we could, and tonight, you were better than us.'”
